Germany July 2011 Part One
I've been meaning to sample the railways of Deutschland for a while, and July 25th saw me board G-EUUJ at Heathrow to head for Munich. This was a planes/trains joint trip and the aircraft shots are to be found here.
After landing at MUC, I spent a while at the excellent Besucherplatz logging the aircraft, before taking an S-Bahn to Munich Hbf, a journey that took 40 minutes. I then headed off to my Hotel, the Ibis in Central Munich with no thanks to Google Maps for the duff directions! After checking in, I returned to the station to attempt some handheld nightshots with a prime lens.

July 25th Munich Hauptbahnhof
After all that excitement, it was back to the Ibis for a well-earned beer! The next day dawned bright and sunny. Clearly this was going to be a photo day, and I quite liked the idea of spending the middle part of the day on the Besucherplatz at Munich Airport when the sun would be perfect. To kill time, I spent the first part of the morning at Munich Ost, where there were a number of morning freight trains passing, in addition to the odd 218-hauled passenger service.

With that, I headed for the Airport on the S-Bahn, before returning to Munich in the evening. Not having any knowledge of where to go for sunny afternoon shots in the Munich area, I arrived at Munich Ost to find the sun straight down the track. Grrrr! I elected to take a spin on 111031 back to the Hauptbahnhof on RE79028. Upon arrival, I nipped outside the station to grab some food and fotted a handful of trams while I ate.

Whilst on the train from Ost-Hbf, I noticed a station where the sun angle would be perfect for any westbound freights. It was called Heimeranplatz, and was reachable from the Hauptbahnhof by S-Bahn. It wasn't as busy as I'd hoped, and a Munich Hbf-bound pair of Rabbits were bowled by a freight train in a lovely sunny spell which may have caused the German photographers assembled here to become accustomed to some traditional Anglo-Saxon language, but I still managed to come away with a decent haul of shots.

With the sky starting to fill in, it was back to the Hauptbahnhof on the S-Bahn and off to a fine establishment just down the road from the Ibis for a Steak and beer.
